Impact of Covid-19 on Indian logistics
December 14,2020
Covid-19 has made a huge impact on world economy, and many organizations has lost a lot of business. The supply and demand of many organizations has completely disrupted, resulting in huge loss of business. Each and every sector has been hit badly due to the pandemic and every major firm has seen certain effect on it. Other than losing jobs, many people in the world are suffering from loss of lives as well. Covid-19 has also made deep impact on logistics sector.
Logistics is the process of acquiring, storing, and transporting the resources to their destination. Poor logistics can impact the overall profit of the business, and can result in huge loss. To explain logistics in simple terms, logistics management is responsible for the possession of right amount of resource at the right time, and delivering it to the right location in proper time without compromising the quality of the resource.
Efficient logistical management is responsible successful function of business. It reduces the cost and helps in maintaining and increasing efficiency. Poor and improper logistical management can result into huge loss involving failure of deliveries, failure to meet customer’s needs, and eventually failing to achieve the target of the business. The working of logistics has changed a lot since 1960. Due to the global expansion of most of the businesses, logistical needs has increased exponentially. This led to the emergence for the need of expertise known as supply chain logisticians.
The impact of Covid-19 can be seen largely in India due to the huge population. Furthermore Covid-19 also affected the logistic sector in India to greater extent. Majority of the loaded vehicles are stranded on roads due to ban on transportation and lockdown. Even if the loaded goods were to be unloaded at nearest client’s warehouse, no labours are available at the warehouse to unload the goods.
Transportation inside the state or city is likely possible, but inter-state transportation is completely banned due to ban of state border crossing. This lockdown imposed on state-wise transportation has resulted into huge loss. Goods and commodities like vegetables, flowers, and other goods which get spoiled in couple of days has to be discarded, which eventually resulted in the loss for both seller and buyer party. To consider the conditions of ports, there are no workers to load the trailers on to the ships, and no sailors are allowed to leave the port due to imposed lockdown. 70% of India transport is at standstill due to the imposed lockdown to avoid the pandemic.
The India economy and logistics both has suffered unrepairable loss due to the ongoing pandemic. Whole country is on standstill and no expectations to when the lockdown will be removed.
